A woman turned to the Reddit community for advice after a tense moment with her brother’s girlfriend. The 26-year-old explained that the problem began over a dress that she really values.

She wrote, “I have this one dress I really like. It’s not expensive or fancy, but it fits me well and I just feel good in it.” For her, it’s not about the price—it’s about how the dress makes her feel when she wears it.

The woman shared that the dress has become her go-to choice for special occasions. “I bought it a few years ago, and I wear it on birthdays or nice dinners,” she said. It has become part of the memorable moments in her life.

Last weekend, her brother’s 24-year-old girlfriend asked to borrow the dress for a wedding. The request surprised her because she already planned to wear it to an event of her own.

She explained, “I said no because I was planning to wear it myself next month to a friend’s engagement party.” She added another reason: “I just… don’t really like lending clothes. I’m always worried they might get stained or stretched out, and honestly I just like having my own things.”

Her brother’s girlfriend laughed at the refusal and called her selfish, saying, “it’s just a dress” and promising she would return it.

The situation got more uncomfortable when her brother seemed to take his girlfriend’s side. “My brother also made a face like I was overreacting,” she said. Feeling pressured, she tried to explain herself.

“I got embarrassed and mumbled something about it being important to me,” she admitted. But the conversation ended awkwardly, leaving tension in the air.

According to the woman, the girlfriend rolled her eyes and said fine, which made the rest of the evening uncomfortable.

Now, she is second-guessing her decision. “I keep thinking maybe I was selfish? It feels silly because it’s just fabric, but at the same time it’s mine and I bought it with my money,” she said.

She is also troubled by how her brother’s behavior changed. “I feel bad though because she seemed upset and my brother hasn’t talked to me much since,” she revealed. This made her wonder if she handled the situation the right way.

The post received many comments supporting her. One person wrote, “NTA. Nobody is entitled to your things, ‘just a dress’ or not. Tell your brother to go buy her the same dress if it’s that important to her.”

Another agreed, saying, “NTA. She can get her own dress. I don’t lend my favorite things either, especially if I’m going to need them soon.”

With her brother and his girlfriend still distant, the woman hopes time will ease the awkwardness caused by one special dress.
