A woman says her daughter’s boyfriend has been living in her home rent-free for a year — and she’s fed up.

The 48-year-old mom shared her story on the Reddit forum “Am I the A——?”, where people ask for advice on personal problems. She explained that her 22-year-old daughter has a 21-year-old boyfriend who moved into their home “around a year ago.”

“What started as staying over every now and again changed to him fully moving in. Like one day he came and never left,” she wrote.

The mom said that, unlike her daughter who has a job, the boyfriend doesn’t work and seems “happy to stay at home all day doing nothing.” She added that he doesn’t help with chores and that she cooks for both of them every night.

“Neither pay any rent or any other bills,” she continued.

She said she recently told them that from now on, they’ll have to buy their own food, cook for themselves, and do their own laundry. “I’m hoping this will give him the kick up the backside that he needs,” she explained, saying she feels she’s “been taken advantage of for far too long.”

The mom also gave the boyfriend three months to either “find a job or move out.”

Other Reddit users strongly supported her decision. Still, many pointed out that she also allowed the situation to get this far.

“Some kid just moved himself into your place, and you haven’t even had a proper conversation about it?”, one person wrote. “Make it very clear that if he intends to stay, he must contribute financially and domestically. Don’t be a doormat.”

“They should pay rent, and chores should be divided until they move out. Stop supporting the deadbeats — and I am including your daughter in that statement,” another commenter added.

A third person agreed, saying, “As parents, we are creating adults who contribute to society. Charge your daughter rent and quit coddling her.”
