An infant was found dead inside a residential building on the campus of the University of Southern California (USC), prompting an ongoing investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

Authorities said officers responded to a call on Monday, Oct. 27, in the 3100 block of McClintock Avenue — the site of USC’s Cardinal Gardens Apartments — where they discovered the body of a full-term infant.

Just over an hour earlier, first responders had arrived at the same location following reports of a 20-year-old woman experiencing difficulty breathing, according to KTLA. She was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. It remains unclear whether the two incidents are connected.

The infant was reportedly 19 hours old, according to a coroner’s report cited by NBC 4 Los Angeles.

The LAPD stated that the case is currently classified as an “undetermined death pending the Coroner’s investigation.” An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 28, per the L.A. County Medical Examiner, as shared by USC’s Annenberg Media on Instagram.

A university spokesperson referred further inquiries to the LAPD. Cardinal Gardens Apartments, located on the north side of USC’s campus, sits across McClintock Avenue from a campus dining hall.
