Patrick Walden, the former guitarist of the early-2000s British rock band Babyshambles, has died at the age of 46.

The band announced his passing late Friday via an emotional Instagram post, sharing a black-and-white photo of Walden alongside a heartfelt message.

“It is with deep regret and sadness that we share the news of Patrick Walden’s death,” the group wrote. “We feel very fortunate to have known, loved, and worked with him, and we kindly ask for respect and privacy during these difficult times. — Peter, Drew, Mik, Adam.”

No cause of death was given.

A Key Player in Babyshambles’ Rise
Walden performed alongside frontman Pete Doherty, bassist Drew McConnell, and drummer Gemma Clarke. The band was formed in 2004 following Doherty’s departure from The Libertines, and they released their debut single that same year.

Before joining Babyshambles, Walden was involved in several other projects, including Fluid, The Six Cold Thousand, and The White Sport. He also played guitar for James Blunt at one point in his career.

Although Walden left Babyshambles in 2005, just a year after the band’s formation, he made a lasting impact. He co-wrote six tracks on their debut album Down in Albion, including fan favorite “The Man Who Came to Stay.” He occasionally reunited with the band for live performances, but a full return never materialized due to ongoing personal struggles.

A Battle With Addiction, and a Turn Toward Sobriety
Walden’s departure from the spotlight was closely linked to his battle with drug addiction. However, in recent years, he shared that he had been working toward sobriety.

In a 2023 interview on the 22 Grand Pod podcast, Walden opened up about his recovery:
“Since I turned 40, I haven’t taken a drink or anything. It’s quite nice to say that. But my whole relationship towards it has changed. I don’t want it anymore.”

Though rumors had been circulating about a possible Babyshambles reunion this year, it remains unclear whether Walden was expected to be part of the lineup.

Patrick Walden leaves behind a legacy of raw talent, unforgettable riffs, and contributions to one of the defining sounds of 2000s British rock.Tools
