Wife Refuses Husband’s Plan to Move in with His Parents After Painful Past Living Experience

A woman turned to Reddit for advice after a tense disagreement with her husband over his decision to move back in with his parents — a plan she said he made without consulting her.

In her post, the 28-year-old explained that she and her husband currently live in a small extension on her parents’ property while saving up to buy their own home. “We didn’t technically live with my parents since we have our own kitchen, dining area, living room, and bedroom,” she wrote.

The situation changed dramatically when her father-in-law collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. Soon after, she overheard her husband and his brother talking about moving back into his parents’ house so they wouldn’t be alone. “He made a decision without even consulting me or asking me if I am comfortable with it,” she said.

The woman shared that she had already lived with her in-laws before — and the experience was miserable. “We tried living with them for seven months when I was pregnant, but my life there was horrible,” she recalled. “It felt like I was walking on eggshells. I couldn’t even grab a bite to eat when I was hungry, even if I bought the groceries myself, since we shared the same fridge.”

When her husband finally mentioned his plan, he said it would be “temporary.” But as they talked, that promise began to fade. “He said until February, until his brother comes home,” she wrote. “I told him then we didn’t have to bring everything from our house, but no — he’s expecting that we’re bringing everything, like full-on moving out.”

She quickly realized it wasn’t going to be a short stay. “So it’s not temporary but a lifetime decision,” she told him, firmly expressing that she was not comfortable with the plan. “He knows what I’ve been through living with them for seven months.”

Trying to find a middle ground, she suggested compromises that would let her husband support his parents without uprooting their lives. “I suggested that we stay there for four days and come home on weekends,” she said. “We don’t have to move everything.” But he rejected that idea — and even dismissed her proposal to rent a place near his parents instead. “He’s not having it,” she wrote.

Frustrated, she finally asked why he was asking for her opinion if he wasn’t willing to consider it. “That’s where things blew up,” she recalled. “He got mad and called me selfish, saying I couldn’t sacrifice for him.”

Her husband then accused her of being the reason something bad might happen to his parents, saying she would be “the blame” if she refused to move in.

Despite feeling hurt and confused, she stood her ground. “We were supposed to build a home on our own,” she said. “His brother freely chased his dreams, and now he’s expecting we’ll be the ones catering to every problem?”

While she said she didn’t mind helping his parents, she drew the line at living with them full-time. “We sacrificed not moving abroad for a better future for our child since no one would look after his parents,” she explained. “But now it turns out I’m the selfish one for saying no to living there fully.”

Commenters on Reddit overwhelmingly supported her, insisting she wasn’t in the wrong. One user wrote, “You’re absolutely not wrong for standing your ground. You’ve already experienced how stressful it was living with his parents, and it’s unfair for your husband to make a decision like this without involving you.” Another added bluntly, “You’ve been down that road for seven months — pregnant. They mistreated you then and will do the same again.”

Many urged her not to put herself or her child in the same toxic environment again. “If your husband has made his decision, he can go,” one commenter said. “But please don’t go there — not even for a few days a week.”
