A woman turned to Reddit’s AITAH subreddit to ask whether she crossed a line after intentionally scaring her neighbor’s children to stop them from peeking into her home.
The original poster (OP), 29, said her bedroom window faces the front yard and she usually keeps the blinds half open for natural light. Recently, however, her neighbor’s 7-year-old twin boys began pressing their faces and hands directly against her window to look inside.
She believes it started because the kids noticed her cats, but it soon became a game for them. Each time she confronted them, the children simply ran away laughing. Multiple conversations with their parents led nowhere — she was told, “They’re just kids being kids,” and advised to “keep the window closed” if she wanted privacy.

Feeling ignored and fed up after months of daily intrusion, OP decided to handle the situation herself.
While hearing the kids outside, she spotted the frightening Halloween mask her boyfriend had worn the previous night. She stood by the window wearing it for nearly 20 minutes until the boys approached again, noses against the glass.
She suddenly popped up and released a loud roar — and the kids ran home screaming and crying. Their mother soon arrived at her door, furious and calling OP a “monster.” OP replied that she has every right to do what she wants inside her own home, and if the children don’t want to see it, they should stay away from her window.
A week later, the boys haven’t returned to her yard — whether out of fear or better parental enforcement.
Still, OP admitted she now wonders if she went too far after friends suggested the kids’ young age made it excessive.

In the comments on her post, many sided with her. One parent wrote that the neighbor was “lucky” OP didn’t call the police:
“NTA. They’re lucky they didn’t get a call from the police instead of just getting scared by a mask. The mother, tho, is TA. She should be teaching her kids better and not to look into random neighbors’ bedroom windows.”
The commenter added that the mother’s suggestion to simply “keep windows closed” ignored the seriousness of the invasion:
“What would be her excuse if her kids had caught you and your boyfriend together through those windows? ‘You shouldn’t be having sex where kids can see it?’ Frankly, you should have done it sooner.”
Another user said they would have involved law enforcement after the first dismissal:
“The first time that woman told me she was okay with her kids coming onto my property and pressing their faces up against my bedroom window, I’d have gone to the police to report them for trespassing, voyeurism and invasion of privacy.”
They emphasized that the behavior — while from children — would be criminal if done by adults and shouldn’t be normalized.
