U.S. President Donald Trump, flanked by Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, addressed the nation from the White House on June 21, 2025, confirming that the United States carried out airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities.

The strikes mark a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, with the U.S. now directly involved. Trump defended the operation as a “precise and successful mission” targeting key Iranian nuclear sites, including the deeply fortified Fordow enrichment facility.

Russia Slams U.S. at U.N., Warns of Global Consequences

At an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Sunday, Russia sharply criticized the U.S. for what it called a reckless act with potentially catastrophic global implications.

“Washington has shown utter disregard for the will of the international community,” said Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia.
“To support its Israeli ally, it’s not only turning a blind eye to the deaths of Palestinians in Gaza but also risking the safety of humanity as a whole. Through its actions, the U.S. has opened a Pandora’s box. No one can predict what horrors may follow.”

U.S. Says Strikes Aimed at Preventing Nuclear Threat

Trump’s decision to strike was coordinated with Israel, which has long urged action to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Both nations say the strikes were defensive, aimed at curbing Iran’s enrichment capacity.

However, Iran denies any intention to build a nuclear weapon and insists its nuclear program is strictly for civilian use.

Dorothy Shea, the acting U.S. ambassador to the U.N., told the Security Council:

“This operation was a direct response to Iran’s escalating nuclear threat. It aimed to eliminate a longstanding danger to global security and assist our ally Israel in its right to self-defense under the U.N. Charter.”

She continued:

“For decades, Iran has promoted violence across the region. It has funded terrorist proxies, launched hundreds of missiles at Israel, and been responsible for the deaths of Americans, including our service members in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

Iran Threatens Retaliation, Possible Closure of Strait of Hormuz

Iran has vowed to respond “forcefully” to the strikes. Its military command described the attack as “futile,” warning that U.S. interests across the Middle East are now legitimate targets.

A spokesperson for Iran’s armed forces said:

“Trump has widened the battlefield. You may have started this war, but we will be the ones to finish it. Expect powerful and painful consequences. God willing, you will regret this gamble.”

Iran’s parliament has also backed a potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz — a critical chokepoint for global oil and gas shipments — though Iran’s leadership has yet to take final action.

Rising Fears of a Wider War

The airstrikes represent a dangerous new phase in the already tense Middle East. While the U.S. maintains that its action was limited in scope, Tehran’s vow of retaliation has sparked fears of a broader regional war.

Iran’s statement made clear that the U.S. strike had “broadened the range of legitimate targets” and warned that the fallout may extend beyond military conflict.

“The clock will no longer turn in your favor,” the Iranian spokesperson warned. “The warriors of Islam will act.”

With tensions spiraling and diplomatic channels strained, the international community is watching closely, uncertain of what comes next.
