The body of a Texas man who jumped into the Trinity River to rescue his son and another boy after their kayak capsized has been recovered.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department confirmed that 53-year-old William Poff of Camilla, Texas, was found deceased in the river on Wednesday, Nov. 12. Both boys also lost their lives in the incident.

“Our thoughts are with Mr. Poff’s family and the families of the two boys during this difficult time,” the department said in a statement.

Authorities responded to the Camilla boat ramp on the evening of Sunday, Nov. 9, after receiving a report that a kayak overturned in the Trinity River, according to the San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office.

“Witnesses reported that two juveniles were riding a kayak when choppy river conditions caused it to overturn,” the sheriff’s office wrote. “The father entered the water in an attempt to rescue his son and his son’s friend but did not resurface.”

Family members later identified the victims. Melissa Patterson told CBS affiliate KHOU that her 15-year-old nephew, Eric Lynn, was among those who died. Julia Poff told Fox affiliate KRIV that her 14-year-old son Jake also drowned, and noted that William was her estranged husband.

Before William was located, Julia explained that the boys “were out on a kayak here on the Trinity River and somehow it capsized.”

“My soon-to-be ex-husband jumped in, tried to save his son and his friend, and he went under,” she said. “We have five kids together, so we’re waiting for Dad to come home so we can lay him to rest.”

In a statement issued Wednesday evening, the San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences to all affected.

“Sheriff Houston and his team extend their heartfelt prayers to all those involved, to the families, friends, and first responders who have been deeply affected by this tragic incident,” the statement read.

Officials also thanked search crews for their efforts, adding, “We are grateful for the dedication, cooperation, and compassion shown by every agency and volunteer who assisted throughout the search.”

Support efforts are underway, with online fundraisers created to assist both families.
