A Welsh community is reeling after 17-year-old Lainie Williams was fatally stabbed inside her home on Thursday morning, an attack that also critically injured her mother, Rhian Stephens.

Authorities are now working to understand what led the alleged suspect to take Lainie’s life and attempt to kill her mother, according to reports from Wales Online, the BBC and Sky News.

Police responded to the home in the residential Cefn Fforest area of Caerphilly County around 7:15 a.m. on Nov. 13. Lainie died at the scene, while her mother was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

An unidentified 18-year-old man has been arrested, and Gwent Police confirmed they are not searching for additional suspects.

More than €1,500 has been raised in support of the family through an online fundraiser created by Lainie’s cousin, Shania Price. “We are heartbroken to share the sad passing of our beautiful Lainie Williams, whose life was tragically taken far too soon,” Price wrote. She added that the community hopes to help ease the burden of providing “the beautiful send-off she deserves.”

Neighbors expressed disbelief that such violence occurred in an otherwise peaceful community. “Something like this is highly unusual in this area, and I can understand if many residents are now frightened,” Cefn Fforest Councillor Shane Williams told Wales Online. “When a young girl loses her life like that, it’s quite horrendous.”

He added that the community is “deeply shocked and saddened” by what happened.

Lainie’s classmates have also been sharing tributes and memories on social media. Many have adopted the slogan “Justice for Lainie” while grieving online. “We will never stop saying your name!” one classmate wrote. “My heart is aching knowing we couldn’t do nothing to help you… Life is cruel, too short and makes us realize to take more time to see the ones we love.”

Authorities have not released a possible motive as of Friday, Nov. 14.
