A woman on the Mumsnet community forum shared concerns about her parents’ plan to move into a smaller home as they get older.
Her parents, both in their mid-60s, currently live in a three-bedroom detached house with a medium-size garden. While the property is a fairly new build, she explained that upkeep is becoming increasingly difficult.
“It’s starting to need maintenance and repairs,” she wrote. “They’re finding it too much trouble, even trying to get workmen in can be a headache. The stairs are going to become a real issue soon due to injury and … the garden takes a lot of maintenance and is going to need the paving changed soon.”
Due to these challenges, the couple has decided to relocate.
“They’ve settled on a new-build ground floor, two-bedroom flat,” she said. “They want to futureproof and don’t intend to move again.”

Despite her hesitation, the daughter acknowledged the advantages of the new location.
“It’s literally a 5-minute walk from a large supermarket, restaurants, cafes, hairdressers, doctors and a health center,” she explained. “There are 4 buses to take them the 20 minutes into the nearest city and a train station 2 minutes away that can have them there in 5 minutes.”
They also won’t be far from the life they know now, as she added that their new home is only a few miles from their current one.
Seeking reassurance, she asked Mumsnet users how they felt about seniors moving into smaller homes.

One commenter responded, “They might regret it for a while as they get used to having less space, but they sound like sensible people who realize they have made the best decision, even if they miss their old home sometimes.”
Another person chimed in with encouragement: “My parents downsized and absolutely love it.”
