Police in Georgia are investigating assassination threats made against Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene and members of her family, after two alarming emails were discovered in a city system.
The Rome Police Department told Newsweek in a statement that it was “in receipt of (2) email assassination threats toward MTG and her family.”
“These went to junk mail and were only released through our IT system within the past few minutes. We are forwarding to the appropriate units for investigation,” the department’s community information specialist, Kelly Madden, said.
The development follows recent comments from President Donald Trump, who on Sunday appeared to downplay threats Greene had highlighted, saying: “I don’t think her life is in danger.”
Background on the Rift Between Trump and Greene
Greene was once one of Trump’s most loyal allies and a prominent figure in his MAGA movement. Their relationship has since fractured over disagreements on several issues, including the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files and the handling of the government shutdown.
Trump has withdrawn his endorsement of Greene and attacked her publicly. On Sunday, he wrote on Truth Social: “Wacky Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Brown (Remember, Green turns to Brown where there is ROT involved!) is working overtime to portray herself as a victim when, in actuality, she is the cause of all of her own problems. The fact is, nobody cares about this Traitor to our Country!”
When asked about Greene’s claims that her life was in danger, Trump said on Sunday: “I don’t think her life is in danger. Frankly, I don’t think anybody cares about her.” Newsweek has contacted the White House via email for comment.
Details of the Threats and Disputed Incidents
Greene said on Sunday that there had been a pipe bomb threat targeting her construction company’s office building in the aftermath of her public split with Trump.
“The hoax pizza deliveries have started now, to my house and my family members,” Greene wrote on X on Sunday. “Update: we also received a pipe bomb threat on my construction companies office building.”
Conservative commentator Laura Loomer challenged that claim on X, saying: “I spoke with law enforcement officials at the police department in Rome, Georgia. They told me they never received a report today of a bomb threat at the business or residence of Marjorie Traitor Greene.”
Greene’s construction company, Taylor Commercial Inc, is based in Alpharetta, Georgia, according to the construction management directory Procore Network. Newsweek has contacted the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety for comment via email and phone.
Rome Police Department had initially told Newsweek that “none of the incidents were within the jurisdiction of the Rome Police Department.”
“Other than an unordered pizza delivery to her home, we are under the impression that all other incidents have occurred elsewhere,” Madden said.
What People Are Saying
Greene expanded on her concerns in a lengthy post on X, writing: “The hoax pizza deliveries have started now, to my house and my family members. Update: we also received a pipe bomb threat on my construction companies office building. President Trump’s unwarranted and vicious attacks against me were a dog whistle to dangerous radicals that could lead to serious attacks on me and my family. Unfortunately, I’ve been down this road before. As a matter of fact, as I campaigned all over the country and defended President Trump, I received dozens of swatting calls on my house and my family members homes along with these hoax pizza deliveries, but even more severely I have received some of the most death threats of any Member of Congress that led to multiple men being convicted and serving time in prison. And all of that came from the left. Now that President Trump has called me a traitor, which is absolutely untrue and horrific. Mark Levin has been calling me a traitor. And so have other prominent likely paid social medial activists. This puts blood in the water and creates a feeding frenzy. And it could ultimately lead to a harmful or even deadly outcome.”
Trump repeated his criticism on Truth Social, writing: “Wacky Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Brown (Remember, Green turns to Brown where there is ROT involved!) is working overtime to portray herself as a victim when, in actuality, she is the cause of all of her own problems. The fact is, nobody cares about this Traitor to our Country!”
What Comes Next
Authorities are now assessing the reported threats and determining appropriate security responses for Greene and her family. It remains unclear whether the emergence and confirmation of these threats will prompt a cooling of rhetoric from any of the parties involved, or whether tensions around the dispute will continue to escalate.
