Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, has sharply criticized Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) following AOC’s condemnation of President Donald Trump’s recent military strike on Iran.

AOC had called the attack “absolutely and clearly grounds for impeachment,” prompting Greene to respond on X (formerly Twitter), labeling her a “pathetic little hypocrite.”

Newsweek reached out to Ocasio-Cortez’s office for comment.

Why It Matters

Tensions between Israel and Iran have escalated in recent days after Israel launched “Operation Rising Lion,” targeting cities including Tehran to disrupt Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. Iran has since responded with missile fire, much of which has been intercepted with the help of U.S.-backed Israeli defense systems.

On Saturday, President Trump confirmed U.S. military strikes on Iranian sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan via a post on Truth Social.

Mixed Reactions Across the Aisle

The response to the strikes has divided both parties. Some Democrats have denounced Trump for escalating foreign conflict without Congressional approval, while others have expressed support for the move. Republicans, too, are split. A recent YouGov poll showed that only 23% of Republican voters support U.S. involvement in the Iran-Israel conflict.

AOC called the attack “disastrous” and a “grave violation” of both the Constitution and the War Powers Resolution.

In response, Greene accused her of hypocrisy:

“YOU fully supported our military and intelligence community running the proxy war against Russia in Ukraine,” Greene wrote. “You don’t get to play anti-war and moral outrage anymore.”

Greene’s Position on the Conflict

Greene has broken from Trump on this issue, stating her opposition to U.S. involvement in yet another foreign war.

“Every time America is on the verge of greatness, we get involved in another foreign war,” she wrote on X. “This is not our fight. Peace is the answer.”

She reiterated her stance in a follow-up post:

“I can easily say I support nuclear-armed Israel’s right to defend itself and also say at the same time I don’t want to fight or fund nuclear-armed Israel’s wars—or any other country’s. I’m sick of funding foreign aid and foreign everything. I want to fund American interests and issues.”

A separate Pew Research poll in February 2025 found that 47% of Republicans felt the U.S. was giving Ukraine too much support—compared to just 14% of Democrats—highlighting the ongoing divide over American involvement abroad.

What Others Are Saying

  • Trump, on Truth Social: “Congratulations to our great American warriors. There is not another military in the world that could have done this. NOW IS THE TIME FOR PEACE!”
  • Senator John Fetterman (D-PA): “This was the correct move. Iran is the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism and cannot be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.”
  • Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-MI): “President Trump sending U.S. troops to bomb Iran without Congressional consent is a blatant violation of the Constitution. Americans don’t want another forever war.”
  • Greene, to Newsweek: “It’s no surprise most Republicans oppose U.S. involvement in Iran. Americans voted to end the forever wars. They want leaders focused on solving problems here at home.”

What’s Next

All eyes are on Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei as the regime decides whether to retaliate or pursue further talks. International reactions—particularly from Russia and China, both allies of Iran—will shape the next phase of this rapidly developing crisis.
