Authorities in Australia are asking for the public’s assistance after a newborn baby was discovered outside a fire station in Canberra.

According to a media release from Australian Capital Territory Policing (ACT), officers were notified around 7:20 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 27, that a baby had been found outside the South Tuggeranong ACT Fire & Rescue Station in Conder, a suburb in the city’s southeast.

The baby was taken to a hospital and showed no signs of injury, police said. It is believed the infant was less than 24 hours old when they were abandoned.

In a follow-up release issued Friday, Nov. 28, police said they are seeking dash-cam footage of a blue SUV that was at the station before 7:20 a.m. and is believed to be linked to the incident.

“Investigators are urging anyone who has dash-cam footage of the fire station on Tharwa Drive and Drakeford Drive between 5:00 am and 7:30 a.m. on [Nov. 27] to come forward,” authorities added.

Police emphasized that their “sole concern” at this stage is “for the health and welfare of the baby’s mother,” and said they are working to identify her so she can receive “appropriate medical support.”

“If you think a friend or family member may be the mother — please encourage them to seek medical help as soon as possible,” they said.

In an email, ACT Policing said the mother had not been located as of Sunday, Nov. 30, and that the investigation remains ongoing.
