A 23-year-old Georgia woman is sharing her story after surviving an alleged domestic violence attack in which, authorities say, her ex-boyfriend shot her multiple times and then drove her around for hours.
Shamay Pitt told local CBS affiliate WSB that on Nov. 2 she agreed to meet her former boyfriend, 25-year-old Joshua Woodruff. She picked him up in her car, and during their conversation, she said, he suddenly pulled out a gun and began firing at her.
“My ears are ringing, but I come into realization that he is shooting at me,” Pitt told WSB.
The terrifying encounter did not end there. According to Pitt, Woodruff then took control of the vehicle and continued driving from DeKalb County through several other counties while she sat in the passenger seat, bleeding from her injuries. She recalled looking down and realizing how grave her condition was, telling WSB, “I seen the inside of me on the outside,” and fearing she might not survive.
Desperate for help, Pitt pleaded with Woodruff to let her out so she could get medical attention. She remembered telling him, “Just lay me on the grass, so I can breathe. I don’t want to die in this car.”
Eventually, Woodruff drove to WellStar Douglas Hospital in Douglasville, Georgia, and left Pitt there. She was later transferred by paramedics to Kennestone Hospital, where she underwent surgery.
According to an arrest warrant reviewed by Law&Crime, security staff at the Douglasville hospital detained Woodruff, and a Douglasville Police Department officer took him into custody. He was first charged with obstruction or hindering law enforcement, and those charges were later upgraded to false imprisonment and aggravated assault.
Woodruff is being held at the Douglas County Jail on $10,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court for a bond hearing on Tuesday.
Pitt is still recovering from her gunshot wounds. Her family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover her medical expenses. She hopes her experience will serve as a warning to others in unsafe relationships, telling WSB, “If you see that red flag, run away.”
