Rob Reiner and his son, Nick Reiner, had a tense and highly visible confrontation at a holiday party on Saturday night — less than a day before Rob and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead at their Los Angeles home on Sunday, Dec. 14, according to multiple people who attended the gathering.

The incident was first reported by TMZ on Monday, describing the exchange as a “very loud argument” that took place at a Christmas party hosted by Conan O’Brien. Two attendees confirmed the dispute happened at O’Brien’s event, describing Nick as disruptive and unpredictable.

“Nick was freaking everyone out,” one guest said. “He was acting crazy and kept asking people if they were famous.”

After the argument, Rob and Michele reportedly left the party, according to TMZ.

The couple were later discovered dead at their home on Sunday, Dec. 14. The Los Angeles Fire Department was called to the residence around 3:30 p.m. local time to provide medical aid. Responders found Rob and Michele at the scene. The couple’s daughter, Romy, was the one who discovered them, according to previously reported accounts.

Nick Reiner was later arrested and charged with murder. He is currently being held without bail.

Rob and Michele first met while he was directing When Harry Met Sally… and later married in 1989. They shared three children: Jake, Nick, and Romy.

In the past, Nick has spoken publicly about years of addiction and homelessness that began when he was a teenager. In a 2016 interview, he described cycling in and out of rehab starting around age 15, eventually drifting away from home and spending long periods without stable housing across multiple states. Their 2015 film collaboration, Being Charlie, drew in part from those experiences.

Rob Reiner was known for directing some of Hollywood’s most enduring films, including This Is Spinal Tap (1984), Stand By Me, The Princess Bride (1987), and A Few Good Men (1992). The son of legendary comedian Carl Reiner, he first became widely known as a performer on the hit sitcom All in the Family.
