Two people died after a small plane crashed at an Illinois airport, authorities said.

The crash happened shortly before 2 p.m. local time on Wednesday, Dec. 17, at DuPage Airport in West Chicago, Ill., according to statements from the DuPage Airport Authority and the Federal Aviation Administration.

Preliminary information indicated that a Piper PA-30 crashed after departing the airport around 1:50 p.m. local time, the FAA said in a statement.

Both people on board the twin-engine aircraft were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the DuPage Airport Authority. The Daily Herald reported the victims were men.

A preliminary FAA accident report said the victims were a member of the flight crew and a passenger. Authorities have not released additional information about their identities.

The Daily Herald also reported the aircraft sustained heavy front-end damage.

The plane was connected to a member of the International Flying Club, which is based at the airport, according to CW affiliate WGN. The nonprofit organization’s website says it was established in 1975 and is “well recognized as offering the most affordable flying opportunities in the Chicagoland area.”

“Our goal is to provide safe and enjoyable flying at the best possible value while striving to create a supportive environment for strengthening pilot skills and building a spirit of fellowship amongst aviation enthusiasts,” the website states.

The International Flying Club did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The airport temporarily closed following the crash, according to the DuPage Airport Authority.

“Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident,” the DuPage Airport Authority said.

The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation, according to the FAA.
