The Biden-era pause on U.S. weapons shipments to Ukraine has come to an end as the Trump administration authorizes $322 million in new arms sales aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses and armored vehicle support, the State Department announced Wednesday.

The package includes $150 million for maintenance and upgrades of American-made armored combat vehicles, and $172 million for surface-to-air missile systems. Congress has been notified of the proposed sales.

This decision follows a recent freeze ordered by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who temporarily halted additional weapons transfers to Ukraine in order to assess U.S. stockpiles — a move that reportedly caught the White House off guard. Just weeks later, President Donald Trump reversed course, announcing renewed support for sending arms to Kyiv.

“We have to,” Trump said earlier this month. “They have to be able to defend themselves. They’re getting hit very hard now. We’re going to send some more weapons — defensive weapons primarily.”

The administration is also promoting a strategy that would see European allies purchase U.S. military hardware to be passed on to Ukraine, though it remains unclear how the latest deals align with that effort.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022, the U.S. has committed over $67 billion in military and security aid to Ukraine. However, Trump’s return to office has brought renewed tension within the administration, with isolationist voices pushing to scale back American involvement in foreign conflicts — including Ukraine.

The U.S. continues to pressure NATO allies to contribute more air defense systems, especially as Russian attacks intensify. But some European nations, particularly those bordering Russia, are wary of weakening their own defenses by giving away advanced systems.
