In a Reddit post, a woman described how a long-standing issue during a remote family holiday finally came to a head when her partner’s family forgot the one food item she had specifically requested, leaving her with nothing to eat at breakfast. She said the incident felt like the culmination of years of feeling overlooked on what was meant to be a relaxing getaway.

The 29-year-old explained that she was traveling with her 28-year-old partner and his family to an extremely isolated location. “It’s an extremely remote location, so we have to purchase everything before we go,” she wrote, adding that the nearest town was more than an hour away.

Despite the challenges of the setting, she said she genuinely loved the destination. This was her fourth year visiting, and she described the area as stunning, with summer days spent enjoying the surrounding river valley.

However, she admitted that a recurring problem had persisted over multiple trips. “There has however been a consistent issue the last few years and today I finally put my foot down,” she wrote.

According to the woman, grocery shopping responsibilities were divided between her and her partner and the rest of his family. When his family handled the main food shopping, she and her partner took care of drinks and snacks, making sure to consider everyone’s preferences.

She acknowledged that she could be selective about food. “I am a picky eater, I will admit it, and at times I eat the bare minimum and do not complain,” she said, explaining that she often stayed quiet to avoid conflict.

This year, she said she tried to prevent any issues by making a simple request ahead of time. For breakfast, the family usually ate fish with a creamy sauce, which she does not eat. To avoid problems, she asked for two mini quiches so she would have something she could enjoy.

The issue became apparent one morning when she woke up to the smell of fish cooking. When she asked whether the quiches had been taken out or if anyone had seen them, her partner told her they had never been purchased.

Although her partner apologized, she said the moment still hurt. Feeling tired and disheartened, she chose to return to their room to lie down and read instead of joining the group.

When her partner asked her to at least come and sit with everyone, she declined. She explained that there was nothing for her to eat and no effort had been made to prepare an alternative.

She stressed that she was not expecting special treatment or refusing to help. She recalled that when it was her turn to make breakfast, she had gone around asking how everyone liked their eggs and cooked different styles to suit each person.

What upset her most, she said, was the lack of any simple substitute. There was no extra toast, no fried egg, and no attempt to make sure she was included. In that moment, she said, she felt excluded and unconsidered.

Her partner’s family told her she was being rude for not joining them and suggested she should have sat with them anyway, which led her to question whether she had overreacted.

Many Reddit commenters sided with her, pointing out that her dietary needs were known in advance. Some said the situation showed a lack of respect, while others suggested she take full control of her own food arrangements in the future to avoid similar situations. One commenter noted that while picky eating can be challenging in social settings, expecting someone to sit through a meal with nothing to eat crosses a basic line of hospitality.
