An Australian mother of two is fighting for her life after a tragic scooter accident during her first overseas trip.

Samantha Baillie, 33, was seriously injured in a collision in Bali, Indonesia, on Dec. 28 that also claimed the life of her partner, Bryce Alexander Black. According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), the couple were riding a scooter when it collided head-on with a car in the early hours of the morning.

An incident report obtained by ABC from Budung police states that the crash occurred around 4:40 a.m. local time on a two-lane road. Authorities noted that visibility was unobstructed and weather conditions were clear at the time.

The report said the scooter driver attempted to overtake another vehicle and turned right across the roadway, entering the path of an oncoming car traveling in the correct lane. The scooter struck the car head-on.

Black, who was driving the scooter, suffered a severe head injury and died at the scene, according to ABC. Baillie sustained multiple injuries and was rushed to a local hospital, where she remains in critical condition. The report also noted that the couple did not have travel insurance.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the families of the Australian man who died and the Australian woman who was injured in Bali. In a statement, the department expressed its deepest condolences to the families during this difficult time.

Australian outlet 7 News reported that Black was also a parent and had one child.

A close friend of Baillie, Savannah-leigh Homer, has since created a GoFundMe page to support Baillie and her family as they navigate the aftermath of the accident.

In the fundraiser’s description, Homer explained that the trip was meant to be a joyful milestone for Baillie — her first time leaving the country — following the start of a new chapter in her life. She confirmed that Baillie was hospitalized in critical condition and faces a long recovery.

Homer said Baillie works as a hairdresser and will be unable to work for an extended period. “How she will manage day to day once she is home is a major concern,” she wrote, adding that there are children on both sides of the family who have been deeply affected.

She also requested privacy and compassion, noting that not everyone had yet been informed of the tragedy.

Homer, who traveled to Bali alongside Baillie’s mother, said the family needs help covering ongoing medical care, outstanding hospital bills, and the cost of arranging Baillie’s medical transfer back to Australia. Additional support will also be needed for daily living expenses during her recovery.

“Thank you for supporting Sam and her family during the hardest time of our lives,” Homer wrote.

In a later Instagram update, Homer shared her gratitude for the outpouring of support, saying the generosity shown within the first 24 hours was overwhelming and deeply meaningful to the family.

She later added that Baillie is the sole custody parent of her two children, while her late partner also had a child. Baillie has not yet been able to return home or speak to her children in person. The family is awaiting travel back to Sydney, where Baillie is expected to undergo immediate surgery on her hands.

Tributes and messages of support have continued to pour in on social media, with many expressing heartbreak over the loss and hope for Baillie’s recovery. One message read, “Sending you lots of love and praying for a speedy recovery,” while another added, “This is heartbreaking. RIP to her partner. It’s good to see the goal almost reached, but the road ahead will be long.”
