A college football player for the Iowa Central Tritons died unexpectedly while on vacation with his girlfriend’s family.

Ethan Walker, 20, died on Sunday, Jan. 4 during a trip to Orlando, Florida, with his longtime girlfriend and high school sweetheart, Kenzie, according to a GoFundMe created to help his family manage the “immense” costs tied to funeral arrangements and transportation.

Kenzie’s parents were also on the trip. The fundraiser says Walker had grown close to them over the years and describes him as a devoted partner who consistently showed care and respect for their daughter.

A cause of death has not been publicly shared. The GoFundMe states that Walker experienced “a sudden medical event” during the trip.

According to the fundraiser, Walker’s mother, Sara, his stepbrother, Jeff, and his older brother, Jordan, remained in Florida as they worked through the process of bringing him back home. His biological father, John, his younger brother, Luke, and his grandparents were in Iowa, preparing to say goodbye. The campaign says the family hopes to raise enough money to allow Walker’s mother to stay with him and accompany him on the flight home to Grinnell.

Walker was a 6-foot-5 offensive lineman for the Iowa Central Tritons. His family said he had been working toward a goal of playing major college football. The fundraiser adds that while he was known for his strength on the field, he was remembered most for his generosity and deep commitment to his family, friends, faith, and community.

The GoFundMe notes that donations will help cover transportation and specialized arrangements needed to return Walker from Florida, emergency travel and lodging for relatives, and funeral services in Iowa. It adds that those who knew him want to ensure he is honored with a farewell that reflects the impact he had on others.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 14 in Grinnell, Iowa.
