The Kremlin said Monday that President Donald Trump would “go down in history” if he succeeds in taking control of Greenland, according to spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. Peskov said he wasn’t judging whether the outcome would be good or bad, but was pointing to what he described as expert opinion about the scale of such a move.
“There are international experts who believe that by resolving the issue of Greenland’s incorporation, Trump will certainly go down in history. And not only in the history of the United States, but also in world history,” Peskov said.
Trump has repeatedly insisted he will accept nothing less than ownership of Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, arguing that if the United States does not act, Russia or China will.
Asked about Trump’s warnings of a Russian threat to Greenland, Peskov declined to address any alleged Russian intentions directly, saying only that a lot of “disturbing information” has been circulating recently.
“Here, perhaps, it is possible to abstract from whether this is good or bad, whether it will comply with the parameters of international law or not,” he added.
Denmark and Greenland’s leaders have firmly rejected Trump’s claims, emphasizing that the island is not for sale and has no intention of becoming part of the United States.
