Almost two dozen children became sick with suspected food poisoning after eating a meal served at their school.

The incident occurred at a Mandal Parishad primary school in India on Thursday, Jan. 29, after students were served reheated food provided through a government school lunch program, CNN-News 18 and Telangana Today reported. According to the outlets, the meal had originally been prepared for a school function held the previous day.

At least 42 children ate the food, and 22 later fell ill, The Independent reported.

Students reportedly began showing symptoms while eating, including vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain. They were quickly taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation and treatment, according to CNN-News 18 and Telangana Today. All of the affected children received medical care and were later reported to be in stable condition, CNN-News 18 said.

Authorities have opened an investigation into what caused the illnesses. A staff member involved in preparing the lunch was removed from their position, The Independent reported.

The school’s principal was also issued a show-cause notice by the District Educational Officer — a formal administrative step requiring an explanation before any disciplinary action is taken, the outlet added.

The Jan. 29 incident was the second reported case of food poisoning at a local public school within days, according to Telangana Today. The latest illnesses have intensified parents’ calls for stricter food safety rules and clearer guidelines for meals served in government-run schools, the outlet reported.

The Khammam District government did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Sunday, Feb. 1.
