A terrifying moment aboard a Disney Cruise Line ship ended in a remarkable rescue after a young girl fell overboard—and her father immediately jumped in after her.
The incident occurred on June 29, as the Disney Dream was returning to Fort Lauderdale following a four-night Bahamian cruise that included a stop at Disney’s Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. According to The Street, the ship’s emergency code “Mr. M.O.B.” (man overboard) was broadcast across the intercom, prompting an urgent response.
“The Crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water,” a Disney Cruise Line spokesperson told USA TODAY. “We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes.”
Passengers onboard praised the crew’s swift response. Social media posts described how crew members quickly launched life rings and deployed a rescue boat. One passenger, Kevin Furuta, posted on Facebook:
“A girl fell overboard from the 4th deck & her dad went in after her … Thankfully the DCL rescue team was on it immediately and both were saved!”
Despite initial speculation that the ship may have been docked, passengers confirmed the rescue occurred while the Disney Dream was cruising between The Bahamas and Florida. The girl reportedly fell from Deck 4, an area with a walking track enclosed by plexiglass safety barriers. It is still unclear how she fell.
Like many major cruise ships, the Disney Dream is equipped with man-overboard detection systems, which are designed to alert crew in real-time when someone goes overboard.
This incident highlights not only the potential dangers at sea but also the importance—and effectiveness—of cruise ship safety protocols and training.
