A man who allegedly shot his daughter told police the gun “just went off,” according to police body-worn camera footage shown at an inquest.
Lucy Harrison, 23, was shot in the chest by her father, Kris Harrison, at his home in Prosper, Texas, on Jan. 10, 2025. She was in Texas visiting him with her boyfriend, Sam Littler, when the shooting occurred.
In the footage, Harrison can be heard telling an officer that they were preparing to leave for the airport and had been “talking about guns.”
“She said, ‘you got a gun?’ I said, yes, I got it out and it just went off and she stood there like, as I pulled it out,” he said. “It went off.”
“I put it on the bed straight away,” he added. “It was in the bedside cabinet, in a locked box. And we took it out to look and just as I picked it up, it went off.”
On Wednesday, Feb. 11, Cheshire Coroner Jacqueline Devonish ruled Lucy’s death “unlawful” and concluded that Harrison had pointed the gun at his daughter, even though it discharged accidentally.

“To shoot her through the chest whilst she was standing would have required him to have been pointing the gun at his daughter, without checking for bullets, and pulling the trigger,” Devonish said in Cheshire Coroner’s Court in Warrington, England.
While Devonish said she accepted there was “a lack of intent,” she found Harrison’s actions to be “truly exceptionally bad and reprehensible” and said they amounted to gross negligence.
A Texas grand jury later declined to indict Harrison for the shooting.
Evidence referenced at the inquest also described a heated argument earlier that day, including a discussion about Trump. Littler told the court that Lucy asked her father, “How would you feel if I was the girl in that situation and I’d been sexually assaulted?” He said Harrison responded that it wouldn’t bother him because he had two other daughters, and that Lucy became upset.
Littler said that shortly before they were due to leave for the airport, Harrison brought Lucy into a bedroom. Seconds later, he heard a loud bang and heard Harrison calling for his wife.
“I remember running into the room and Lucy was lying on the floor near the entrance to the bathroom and Kris was just screaming, just sort of nonsense,” Littler told the court.

Harrison, who did not attend the inquest, said in a statement that he had taken his daughter into the bedroom to show her his gun after they watched a news item about gun crime.
“As I lifted the gun to show her I suddenly heard a loud bang. I did not understand what had happened. Lucy immediately fell,” he said.
In a statement read to the court, Lucy’s mother, Jane Coates, said the ruling had helped restore her daughter’s voice after what she described as a year of shock, grief, and a determined fight for the truth to be heard.
