PENTAGON — Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, speaking Wednesday from a rebranded “Department of War,” provided a chilling update on the four-day-old conflict in Iran, asserting that American and Israeli forces have only begun a campaign to “dismantle, demoralize, and destroy” the Islamic Republic’s military infrastructure.

The briefing comes as the death toll in the region surpasses 800 people following the Saturday launch of “Operation Epic Fury.” Hegseth described the results of the initial strikes as “historic,” signaling a shift in U.S. military doctrine toward what he termed “unshackled” American power.

A Campaign of ‘Sheer Destruction’

In a direct and aggressive address, Hegseth touted the synergy between U.S. forces and the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). He characterized the joint operation as an existential threat to the Iranian regime, which has been without a clear leader since the reported death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“The combination is sheer destruction for our radical Islamist Iranian adversaries,” Hegseth told reporters. “They are toast and they know it, or at least soon enough, they will know it.”

The Secretary confirmed that the rules of engagement have been significantly broadened under the direction of President Donald Trump. “This was never meant to be a fair fight,” Hegseth said. “We are punching them when they are down, which is exactly what it should be.”

Retaliation for Slain U.S. Troops

A primary driver of the current intensity is the Sunday drone strike on Port Shuaiba, Kuwait, which claimed the lives of six U.S. service members. The Pentagon has officially identified four of the fallen:

  • Capt. Cody A. Khork, 35
  • Sgt. 1st Class Noah L. Tietjens, 42
  • Sgt. 1st Class Nicole M. Amor, 39
  • Sgt. Declan J. Coady, 20

Hegseth vowed to “avenge” these losses, stating that U.S. “war fighters” now possess maximum authority to conduct “death and destruction from the sky, all day long.”

High-Value Targeting and Naval Milestones

In a significant revelation, Hegseth claimed that a recent U.S. air strike successfully eliminated an individual allegedly involved in a plot to assassinate President Trump. While the Secretary noted the assassination plot was not the primary focus of the war, he confirmed the individual was placed on the target list.

“Iran tried to kill President Trump. And President Trump got the last laugh,” Hegseth remarked.

The conflict has also extended to the sea. Hegseth confirmed the first sinking of an enemy ship by a torpedo since World War II, reporting that a U.S. Navy submarine destroyed an Iranian warship in international waters. He described the event as a “quiet death” for the Iranian vessel.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

As the military campaign intensifies, the humanitarian cost continues to mount. According to the Iranian Red Crescent Society, the death toll in Iran has reached 787. Relief operations are reportedly struggling to keep pace, with over 1,000 emergency teams deployed across 153 affected counties.

The war began early Saturday, Feb. 28, after President Trump declared hostilities from Mar-a-Lago, citing nearly five decades of Iranian aggression. Iran responded with missile and drone strikes targeting U.S. assets in Bahrain and the UAE, most of which were intercepted by regional allies.

What’s Next

The Pentagon indicates that “Operation Epic Fury” will continue with “massive and ongoing” aerial and naval strikes. The international community remains on high alert as Iran has yet to name a successor to Ayatollah Khamenei, leaving a power vacuum in Tehran as U.S. forces continue to “fix and find” the regime’s remaining leadership.
