A new memoir by California Governor Gavin Newsom provides an intimate and potentially revealing look at the private living arrangements of Donald and Melania Trump during their time in the White House, fueling long-standing speculation that the couple leads largely independent lives.

In his book, Young Man in a Hurry: A Memoir of Discovery, released in early 2026, Newsom recounts a visit to Air Force One during the first Trump administration. The Governor describes entering the presidential suite to find a bedroom configured with two separate beds, spaced several feet apart.

“Two Beds, You Know”

According to the memoir, Newsom witnessed the layout during a flight where the President and First Lady were both present. Newsom writes that the chamber, intended for the couple to retire during long-haul trips, was conspicuously arranged for individual sleeping.

Newsom further claims that Trump himself addressed the arrangement with a characteristic mix of bravado and ambiguity. “Melania wanted one bed,” Newsom recalls Trump saying, before adding, “But two beds, you know, two beds next to each other.” Newsom noted that the President appeared to “wink” while making the comment, leaving the true nature of their preference open to interpretation.

A Pattern of “Separate Lives”

The revelation aligns with a series of reports suggesting the Trumps maintain a non-traditional domestic structure. This narrative has gained traction as Melania Trump has spent significant portions of the second Trump term away from Washington, frequently residing at Trump Tower in New York or her suite at Mar-a-Lago.

Author and Trump biographer Michael Wolff has previously asserted on The Daily Beast Podcast that the couple is “effectively separated,” characterized by:

  • Minimal Joint Appearances: A significant decrease in the First Lady’s participation in official campaign and state events.
  • Independent Residences: Strategic stays in New York to oversee her son Barron’s education and manage her own business interests.
  • Public Demeanor: Observers frequently point to a perceived emotional distance during their rare joint public outings.

White House Rebuttal

The White House has consistently and aggressively dismissed these claims. In response to earlier allegations by Wolff, spokespeople labeled the reports “fraudulent” and “baseless gossip.”

However, Newsom’s account adds a primary-source observation to the discourse. As the 2026 midterms approach and the President continues a second term defined by intense scrutiny, the “separate lives” narrative remains a persistent shadow over the administration’s image of a unified First Family.
