President Donald Trump formally swore in former Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin as the Secretary of Homeland Security on Tuesday, moving to stabilize a department currently paralyzed by a partial government shutdown and a leadership vacuum.

The Oval Office ceremony, while brief, underscored the high stakes for the agency. Mullin assumes control of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as lawmakers remain deadlocked over funding, which lapsed in February.

During the proceedings, President Trump emphasized the importance of Mullin’s support system. Turning his attention to Mullin’s wife, Christie, the President remarked on her youthful appearance, noting she looked “about 22 years old.” Christie, 47, a business owner and co-chair at the America First Policy Institute, has been married to the new Secretary for 28 years.

The President also shared a lighthearted moment with Mullin’s eldest son, Jim, a former wrestler at Oklahoma State University. After testing the young man’s bicep, Trump quipped to reporters that Jim was “made of steel” and warned them not to “wrestle him.”

Mullin’s confirmation marks a rapid pivot for the administration. He replaces former Secretary Kristi Noem, whom the President dismissed earlier this month. Noem’s tenure ended abruptly following a series of contentious congressional oversight hearings where both parties questioned her supervision of immigration enforcement operations and her ability to navigate the department’s budgetary crises.

The new Secretary faces an immediate uphill battle. DHS operations have been hampered for weeks due to the ongoing funding lapse. Mullin, known for his background as a business owner and his tenure in the Senate, is expected to leverage his legislative ties to break the impasse on Capitol Hill.

Christie Mullin is expected to remain a visible figure alongside her husband. A lifelong Oklahoman and second-degree black belt in karate, she has been a partner in the family’s business ventures since their teenage years. Beyond her commercial success, she is deeply involved in youth ministry and self-defense instruction.

As Mullin takes the oath, the administration is signaling a shift toward a more collaborative relationship with Congress to restore DHS functionality. Whether Mullin can translate his personal rapport with the President into a legislative victory remains the defining question of his early term.
