Hunter Biden has officially moved outside the United States, according to a court filing submitted last week by his legal counsel. The relocation marks a significant shift for the 56-year-old following a decade defined by high-profile federal trials, a presidential pardon, and an escalating financial crisis.
In a 14-page document filed on April 6, attorney Barry Coburn confirmed that his client now “lives abroad.” While Coburn declined to provide specific details regarding Biden’s current residence, the filing was submitted as part of an ongoing civil lawsuit over unpaid legal fees.
The move follows Biden’s comments during a November 2025 appearance on the Wide Awake Podcast, where he revealed he was splitting time between the U.S. and Cape Town. His wife, Melissa Cohen Biden, is a native of South Africa.
Biden cited the destruction of his Malibu rental during the 2024 Palisades fire as a primary catalyst for the move, stating he had “nothing to go back to” in California. “I’ve fallen madly in love with Cape Town,” Biden said during the interview, describing the transition as a fulfilled promise to his family to seek a quieter life after his father, former President Joe Biden, left office.
The relocation has not shielded Biden from the scrutiny of the current administration. In March 2025, President Donald Trump revoked Biden’s taxpayer-funded Secret Service protection. Trump justified the decision by criticizing the expense of the 18-person detail and questioning Biden’s presence in South Africa. The White House later listed the revocation of this protection as a top achievement in its “365 wins” summary of Trump’s first year back in office.
Despite receiving a full presidential pardon for federal gun and tax charges in late 2024, Biden’s financial liabilities remain severe. He is currently facing litigation from the law firm that represented him during his criminal proceedings. Biden recently disclosed that he is “broke,” citing $17 million in debt accumulated from years of legal battles and Republican-led congressional inquiries.

The legal pressure is compounded by a potential $1 billion defamation lawsuit threatened by Melania Trump. The former first lady’s legal team is demanding a retraction after Biden repeated allegations involving Jeffrey Epstein. Biden has remained defiant, recently posting videos mocking the Trump family and dismissing the legal threats.
Though he was spotted with his parents in Santa Ynez, California, for Easter earlier this month, the recent court filing confirms his permanent status is now overseas as he attempts to navigate a mountain of debt and ongoing political hostility.
