House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) signaled a deepening rift in the Trump administration this week, publicly forecasting that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will be the next high-ranking official to depart the cabinet.

Speaking at the National Action Network Convention in New York City, Jeffries characterized the current White House as “fragile” following the recent exits of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Attorney General Pam Bondi. He attributed these departures to a combination of internal volatility and sustained oversight pressure from congressional Democrats.

The prediction follows a turbulent start to 2026 for the executive branch. Kristi Noem resigned her post in March, followed shortly by Bondi earlier this month. Jeffries framed these resignations not as isolated incidents, but as a “pattern of instability” that Democrats intend to exploit through rigorous accountability measures.

“Kristi Noem is gone. Pam Bondi is gone. Pete Hegseth is next,” Jeffries told the audience, citing what he described as an administration struggling to maintain a cohesive leadership team.

Jeffries leveled his sharpest critiques at Hegseth’s credentials. The Minority Leader labeled the former Fox News host as the “most unqualified person” to ever lead the Department of Defense, arguing that a lack of traditional policy experience has directly contributed to deteriorating conditions in the Middle East.

“The situation has turned out horrifically,” Jeffries stated, linking the administration’s foreign policy outcomes to Hegseth’s leadership. He further noted that the Defense Secretary’s confirmation was narrow, leaving him with little political capital to survive the current wave of scrutiny.

The push to remove Hegseth coincides with a broader Democratic strategy to reclaim oversight authority. Jeffries confirmed the party is currently:

  • Advancing a War Powers Resolution: Seeking Republican crossovers to curb executive military authority in the Middle East.
  • Briefing Accountability Measures: Preparing the House Judiciary Committee to explore tools including the 25th Amendment and contempt proceedings for former officials like Bondi.
  • Targeting Midterm Momentum: Using cabinet turnover to argue for a change in congressional leadership in the upcoming 2026 elections.

While the White House has not officially commented on the Minority Leader’s predictions, the public nature of the remarks signals a shift in Democratic tactics. By naming Hegseth directly on national platforms like Morning Joe, Jeffries is effectively forcing a referendum on the Pentagon’s leadership during a critical period of global instability.
