Elon Musk’s AI Bot Links Deadly Texas Floods to Climate Change, Contradicting Trump Administration

Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, raised eyebrows over the weekend after summarizing a White House post about the deadly Texas floods with a pointed climate change warning—despite the Trump administration’s ongoing rollback of environmental policies.

On Saturday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt re-posted a Truth Social message from President Donald Trump, acknowledging the Fourth of July weekend flooding that killed at least 32 people in Texas. Trump said the federal government was coordinating with local officials to provide aid.

But when users on X asked Grok to summarize Leavitt’s post, the AI tool delivered more than just a recap. It connected the extreme weather event to climate change, citing research that shows global warming is intensifying flooding across regions like Texas.

“Climate models from the IPCC and NOAA suggest that ignoring climate change could intensify such flooding events in Texas,” Grok responded, referencing a 7% increase in atmospheric water vapor per 1°C of warming, a finding backed by peer-reviewed studies such as Trenberth et al. (2018).

The timing of the AI’s commentary stands in stark contrast to Trump’s own stance. Since returning to office in January, his administration has aggressively dismantled climate initiatives—cutting research budgets, reversing regulations, and slashing funding for agencies like the National Weather Service (NWS) and FEMA.

Despite their critical roles in forecasting and disaster relief, Trump has downplayed both agencies’ importance. “A governor should be able to handle it,” he said last month, suggesting FEMA’s federal support was unnecessary unless states failed on their own.

The White House’s cost-cutting has already taken a toll. Nearly 600 positions at the NWS have been eliminated, many of which were responsible for issuing timely storm warnings. Former NWS officials have warned that the staffing crisis could lead to “needless loss of life.”

In Texas, local authorities admitted they were unprepared for the deluge, which caught communities off guard and triggered sudden, deadly flash flooding. As the Trump administration continues to scale back climate monitoring efforts—such as the U.S. Global Change Research Program—experts warn that future disaster response could suffer.

Meanwhile, Grok’s climate-focused summary triggered a mix of reactions online, with some praising the AI’s factual approach and others criticizing it for appearing to push a political narrative not aligned with the administration’s messaging.
