Photos of U.S. President Donald Trump showing visibly swollen ankles and bruising on his right hand have stirred speculation online, prompting a public clarification from the White House. According to a statement released Thursday, Trump has been evaluated by medical professionals and diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI)—a common but benign vascular condition.

Doctor’s Report Clears Serious Concerns

The White House medical team confirmed that the President’s health remains within “normal limits,” with his cardiac structure and function described as “normal.” A letter from Trump’s physician noted that CVI is not a serious condition, though it can cause noticeable swelling in the lower legs and ankles.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt added that the bruising on Trump’s right hand is consistent with “minor soft tissue irritation” resulting from frequent handshakes and the routine use of aspirin, part of his standard cardiovascular care.

Viral Images from MetLife Stadium Sparked Speculation

The health speculation began after images of Trump seated alongside First Lady Melania Trump at the FIFA Club World Cup finals at MetLife Stadium went viral. Viewers pointed out swelling around his ankles and discoloration on his right hand.

Social media users fueled rumors after another video, filmed outside the White House days later, appeared to show the President’s hand blemish concealed under flesh-toned makeup, further intensifying scrutiny.

What Is Chronic Venous Insufficiency?

According to the Cleveland Clinic, chronic venous insufficiency is a condition where the veins in the legs are unable to efficiently return blood to the heart, often due to damage or weakening of vein valves. The condition is more common in individuals over 70.

“CVI causes blood to pool in your leg veins, leading to high pressure in those veins,” the clinic explains.

There are three types of leg veins that can be affected:

  • Deep veins (run through muscles)
  • Superficial veins (closer to the skin’s surface)
  • Perforating veins (connect deep and superficial veins)

While early symptoms can be mild, CVI can interfere with mobility and overall quality of life if left unmanaged.

For now, doctors have assured the public that President Trump’s condition is manageable and does not present an immediate health threat.
