At least five teenagers were injured when a gunman opened fire at an apartment complex in Texas.
The group, aged 15 to 17, was gathered in an outdoor area of the Commissioner’s Corner Apartments on Montana Avenue in East El Paso just before 9 p.m. local time on Monday, Sept. 22, when an altercation broke out, KTSM and CBS 4 Local reported, citing the El Paso Police Department.
Officer Adrian Cisneros told the outlets that the situation escalated and a man began shooting.
Two females and three males were transported to the hospital after being struck in the incident, according to ABC News.
One female victim suffered potentially critical injuries, while the other four sustained what KTSM described as “non-life-threatening injuries.”
Multiple first responders arrived at the scene as witnesses shouted in a video shared on YouTube by the news outlet.
A 15-year-old has been taken into custody, but authorities say it is too early to confirm if this individual was the shooter, CBS 4 Local reported.
The apartment complex on the 10700 block of Montana remains closed while authorities investigate. KTSM reported that the Crimes Against Persons Unit, the Gang Unit, and the Crime Scene Unit all responded.
The El Paso Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
