A woman in the U.K. has been sentenced for the 2022 murder of her husband, which she at first tried to claim was a suicide.

The victim, 29-year-old Kyle Pugh, was killed on March 22, 2022, during a violent incident at the couple’s home in Newport. His wife, 34-year-old Amy Pugh, was later convicted of his murder, according to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

In June, Amy was found guilty, and on Thursday, Sept. 4, she was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 13 years and 77 days.

During the trial, the court heard that the couple argued before Amy attacked Kyle. She hit him, and when he struck her back, Amy pulled him down and compressed his neck, causing fatal injuries.

Instead of calling for help right away, Amy waited about 20 minutes before dialing emergency services. When paramedics arrived, she was giving Kyle CPR and told them he had hanged himself with a belt.

On the 911 call, she could be heard saying, “Kyle, wake up, why have you done this?” the BBC reported. When emergency workers arrived, Amy appeared upset and asked, “Has he got a pulse or what? Because there’s a chance that he will survive this stupidity,” ITV reported.

Kyle was taken to the hospital but died the next day.

Amy was arrested the following month and officially charged in November 2022.

On Friday, the judge said Amy “decided to concoct a lie and stage a scene,” the BBC reported.

Emily Clewer of CPS said Amy’s actions “robbed Kyle Pugh of the rest of his life and deprived his family of their loved one.”

“There is no sentence that can return Mr. Pugh to his family, but we hope they are comforted that his killer has been brought to justice,” Clewer added.
