A newborn baby girl was found alive inside a toilet tank in Bangkok, Thailand.

On Saturday, Nov. 15, a cleaner was working on the third floor of an office building in the Lat Krabang district of the Thai capital when they heard the cries of a baby, according to The Bangkok Post.

After entering the restroom, the worker lifted the lid of the toilet tank — which was half-filled with water — and discovered the infant inside.

The baby, believed to have been placed in the tank shortly after birth, was reportedly naked, with her hands pale and shriveled from having been submerged in the water, per The Metro. Authorities are said to have arrived at the scene at around 11:00 a.m.

The newborn was transported to Sirindhorn Hospital, according to The Metro. While The Bangkok Post reports that she was initially in “critical” condition, she was later confirmed to be “unharmed” and weighing around six pounds.

In a video shared by Newsflare, the baby girl can be seen wrapped in white blankets, resting peacefully in a crib at the hospital.

Police Captain Kritsada Saikhong of Lat Krabang Police Station said in a statement that the child was less than one day old, as reported by The Sun.

“She was a newborn but there was no sign of the mother,” Saikhong said. “We will proceed with the investigation to find who left the baby girl in the toilet. Officers are checking CCTV cameras to establish who was in the building and who used the bathroom.”

If found guilty of abandonment under Thai Penal Code Section 306, the child’s parents could face up to three years in prison and a fine of up to 6,000 baht (about $185).
