During a candid conversation on the July 16 episode of the IMO podcast, hosted by Michelle Obama and her brother Craig Robinson, former President Barack Obama opened up about the formative influence of a gay college professor and emphasized the value of exposing boys to a wide range of male role models — queer, straight, wealthy, working-class, Black, White, and beyond. Michelle Obama echoed the sentiment, encouraging parents to steer boys toward interests outside of athletics.
Barack Obama kicked off the discussion by stressing the importance of nurturing “emotionally intelligent” young men, noting that boys benefit from having multiple male influences, not just their fathers.
He fondly recalled visiting Michelle’s home during their early dating days and being struck by the diverse expressions of masculinity among her male relatives.
“That’s one of the things that I think a lot of times boys need — not just exposure to one guy, one dad. No matter how good the dad is, he can’t be everything,” he said. “That boy may need somebody to give some perspective on the dad, right?”
Barack Obama Reflects on Gay Professor’s Role in His Youth
Obama went on to recall one of his “favorite” college professors — an openly gay man — who played a key role in shaping his worldview. He credited the professor with challenging him on his early ignorance and helping to broaden his understanding.
The former president stressed the importance of LGBTQIA+ individuals as mentors and peers in boys’ lives. Their presence, he explained, can help foster empathy and create inclusive communities where kids who may be struggling with identity can feel less isolated.
“You need that, to show empathy and kindness. And by the way, you need that person in your friend group, so that if you then have a boy who is gay or non-binary or whatever, they have somebody that they can go, ‘Okay, I’m not alone in this,’ right? So that, I think, is creating that community. I know it’s corny, but that’s what they need.”
Michelle Obama added her voice to the conversation, encouraging parents to introduce boys to hobbies beyond just sports.
“They need to have other outlets. They have to be able to learn how to be more than just the sport that they care about,” she said. “And while they get great skills in sports… it isn’t music, it’s not language, it’s not social in certain ways. And so, I think we owe it to our boys to be very deliberate about saying enough with sports and let’s try some other things.”
Obama Critiques Progressive Messaging Around Boys
In a pointed remark, Barack Obama criticized what he sees as a rhetorical misstep among progressives — sidelining boys while championing gender equity for girls.
“As quote-unquote progressives, Democrats, progressive parents, enlightened ones, we’ve made that mistake sometimes… where it’s like we’re constantly talking about what’s going on with the boys instead of what’s right with them. And that’s been a mistake. And I think people are starting to recognize that.”
He said it was “promising” to see young men embracing new, healthier definitions of manhood, even as they face backlash for rejecting outdated ideas such as traditional chivalry.
