A routine cosmetic procedure has turned into a medical nightmare for a Cincinnati-area family after Rachel Tussey, a 47-year-old mother of three, was declared brain dead following alleged complications from a “mommy makeover” surgery.
Tussey, a popular TikTok creator known for documenting her fitness journey, underwent a tummy tuck procedure on February 25. While she entered the facility with optimism, her husband, Jeremy Tussey, alleges that a series of medical failures and a lack of urgency by surgical staff led to a catastrophic loss of oxygen that has left her on life support.
A ‘Midlife Glow Up’ Turned Tragic
Before entering the operating room, Rachel Tussey shared her excitement with her 25,000 TikTok followers. In a video captioned “#midlifeglowup,” she was seen in a hospital gown, expressing confidence in her surgical team and her faith.
“Please pray. I know it’s gonna be great. I’ve waited a really long time for this,” Tussey told her audience. “I’m in good hands… Let’s do this.”
However, the routine nature of the elective surgery took a dark turn during the recovery phase. According to Jeremy Tussey, the surgeon initially informed him at approximately 5:45 p.m. that the procedure “went great.” But as Jeremy entered the recovery room, he noticed immediate red flags.

Allegations of Medical Negligence
In a heartbreaking video update posted on March 3, Jeremy recalled the moments his wife’s condition plummeted. He described seeing Rachel’s face appear “off-color,” which he initially attributed to a standard lack of blood flow post-surgery.
The situation escalated when Rachel became unresponsive to her name. According to her husband, a nurse began performing CPR, but the atmosphere lacked the necessary emergency response.
“I’m just a dumb construction worker, but I could tell something was wrong,” Jeremy said. “But, there was no sense of urgency.”
The family alleges that the plastic surgeon was called back to the room to assess the situation before 911 was eventually contacted. By the time Rachel arrived at TriHealth Bethesda North Hospital, the damage was severe. Clinical reports shared by the family indicate she was deprived of oxygen for more than six minutes.
“I was told last night that she’s brain dead,” Jeremy stated. “To me, it looks like incompetence. Somebody dropped the ball and killed my wife.”

Conflicting Reports on Current Condition
As of mid-March, there are conflicting reports regarding Rachel’s status. A GoFundMe page established on March 5 to support the family initially stated that Jeremy had made the “heartbreaking decision to remove her from life support.”
However, subsequent social media updates from those close to the family suggest that while Rachel remains in a “vegetative state,” she may still be physically alive. The family has not clarified if the transition to palliative care has been completed or if she remains on mechanical ventilation.
The GoFundMe description paints a portrait of a woman dedicated to her community: “Rachel was truly full of life. She loved adventure, cherished her family deeply, and lived as an example of what community and compassion should look like.”
Legal Action and Next Steps
The Tussey family confirmed to local outlet WXIX-TV that they have retained legal counsel to investigate the circumstances of the surgery and the subsequent emergency response. As of press time, no formal medical malpractice lawsuit has been filed against the plastic surgeon or the surgical center.
The tragedy highlights the inherent risks of elective cosmetic surgeries, particularly “mommy makeovers,” which often involve multiple procedures—such as tummy tucks and breast augmentations—performed simultaneously. Medical experts note that while these surgeries are common, they carry risks of blood clots, pulmonary embolisms, and anesthesia complications that require vigilant post-operative monitoring.
Rachel leaves behind her husband and three children: Tristan, Alec, and Livi. The family continues to seek answers as they navigate the legal and emotional aftermath of the procedure.
