Two bodies were recovered from a frozen lake in Sheridan Township, Michigan, on Sunday, Dec. 14, according to a news release from the Mason County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO).

Authorities identified the victims the next day as Daniel Meyers, 65, and Jason Aemmer, 49. Police said the men and their snowmobiles were discovered about six feet beneath the ice on Round Lake on the morning of Dec. 14.

Investigators said they were alerted around 12:30 a.m. that two snowmobilers were missing. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office began searching trails in Lake County, then expanded the search to eastern Mason County at about 4:30 a.m.

Because of darkness and heavy snowfall, deputies could not immediately check the lake from shore, the MCSO said. At first light, officials spotted what appeared to be a snowmobile helmet several hundred yards offshore.

Authorities then deployed a drone over the lake and located a hole in the ice, confirming the helmet was in the opening. Rescuers tried to reach the area but repeatedly broke through the ice, making recovery efforts from the surface unsafe, the MCSO said.

Dive teams from the MCSO, Michigan State Police (MSP) Dive Services Team, and the Manistee County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the search and ultimately recovered both men.

Meyers had served as the Director of Music at Muskegon Community College for 15 years, the college confirmed on Monday, Dec. 15. He led the MCC Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, and Jayhawk Sound Pep Band.

“We are heartbroken over the profound loss of our Director of Music and friend, Dan Meyers,” Muskegon Community College President Dr. John Semon said in a statement. “We extend our deepest sympathy to his family. Dan’s enthusiasm for life, music, and the students he taught had a tremendous impact on the MCC Community. He will be missed by all.”

He is survived by his wife, Melissa, and their three daughters, Mason County Press reports.
