A formal investigation is underway in the San Martín Justice system following the tragic death of 1-year-old Dante Valentín Bermudes Rumi, who succumbed to asphyxiation after allegedly choking on a synthetic nail fragment.

The fatal accident occurred on Saturday, March 21, while the child’s mother, Aylin Saucedo, was changing his diaper. Saucedo, a professional manicurist, reported that she discovered her son struggling to breathe after he encountered a piece of a clipped acrylic nail.

In a desperate attempt to save the toddler, Saucedo tried to manually retrieve the object from his mouth. However, the child swallowed the fragment during the struggle, further obstructing his airway. After seeking immediate help from neighbors and relatives, Saucedo rushed the boy to Grand Bourg Trauma Hospital.

Despite a 10-minute emergency transit and exhaustive life-saving efforts by medical personnel, Dante was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

An autopsy conducted by forensic experts confirmed that the cause of death was asphyxiation due to airway obstruction. Crucially, the report indicated no signs of physical violence or trauma on the child’s body.

The prosecutor’s office is currently treating the case as a domestic accident. While the investigation remains open to ensure all protocols are met, authorities confirmed there are currently no suspects in the toddler’s death.

The tragedy has been further complicated by a public and bitter dispute between the boy’s parents. Saucedo alleges that Dante’s father blamed her for the accident and took steps to exclude her from the grieving process.

“The father paid the funeral home to keep me from participating,” Saucedo told local news outlet Todos Noticias. She claimed she was initially denied information regarding the wake and burial locations.

According to Saucedo, she was eventually permitted a 45-minute window to say a final goodbye to her son, but only under strict conditions dictated by the father.

In a poignant social media post, Saucedo expressed the profound impact of the loss, stating her “heart is broken” and describing her life as being “shattered into a thousand pieces.”

As the San Martín Justice system continues its inquiry, the case serves as a harrowing reminder of the hazards posed by small household objects to infants and toddlers. Local safety advocates emphasize that domestic accidents remain a leading cause of pediatric emergencies worldwide.
