Bride Accuses Cousin of ‘Trying to One Up Her’ with Controversial Dress, Starts ‘Screaming Match’ at Wedding

A bride and her cousin got into a heated argument over the cousin’s choice of attire at a recent beach wedding.

The cousin, who attended the wedding as a guest, shared her experience in a post on Reddit’s “Am I the A——” forum. She explained that because the ceremony was held on the beach, she thought it would be appropriate to wear “a sky blue cocktail dress.” The bride, however, did not share that sentiment.

“My cousin got mad,” the Redditor wrote. “She accused me of trying to one up her in her own wedding and trying to steal the attention.”

The guest said she deliberately kept her look understated, opting not to wear jewelry or high heels out of concern the bride might accuse her of upstaging her. This choice hints at possible past tensions between the two over fashion or attention.

As the argument grew more intense, it began drawing attention from others at the event.

“My aunt told her to calm down and said that it’s just a dress and it’s not like I’m wearing a white dress to the wedding,” she recalled.

Despite efforts to calm the situation, the conflict escalated.

“It became a screaming match and my aunty, uncle and my cousin’s partner had to pull her away because she wouldn’t stop yelling at me,” the Reddit user said.

Feeling the tension wasn’t dying down, the cousin chose to quietly exit the celebration.

“My parents and siblings asked why I wasn’t there and I told them what happened,” she wrote. “They were mostly on my side, but they didn’t want to get involved and I can’t blame them. They’re not on my cousin’s side—they just wanted to know what happened. I also don’t know how the other guests reacted.”

She ended her post by including a link to the dress and asking the community: “Was I TA (The A——) for wearing a sky blue dress to my cousin’s wedding?”

In a comment, the guest clarified that the bride wore “a white lace wedding gown with a white cathedral length lace veil.” The bridal party was dressed in cream, while many other guests chose colorful outfits in shades of blue, yellow, pink, and orange.

The majority of Reddit users sided with the cousin, suggesting the bride may have been projecting personal insecurities.

“I think the obvious answer is you are attractive and she is not. At least in her own head,” one top commenter wrote. “You were showing her up by simply showing up 🤷‍♂️.”

Another user added: “NTA (Not The A——) and I’m going to go out on a limb and assume you’re prettier than your cousin. She’s insecure, probably jealous, and I’d be the bigger person and just say, ‘Sorry, I thought it would be appropriate for a beach wedding,’ and then wash my hands of it.”
