Bride Feels Robbed After Groomsman’s Girlfriend Proposes During Bouquet Toss, Stealing the Spotlight

A bride is questioning whether she’s “overreacting” after an unexpected twist overshadowed her wedding this past weekend.

On Reddit’s “Wedding Drama” forum, the 32-year-old bride explained that during the bouquet toss, one of the groomsman’s girlfriends leapt forward and caught it. That part seemed harmless—until what happened next.

“[She] immediately pulled out a ring and proposed to him,” the bride recalled. “Everyone gasped, and instead of cheering for us, the crowd swarmed them. People were recording, congratulating, the whole nine yards. It completely derailed the moment.”

Although catching the bouquet traditionally symbolizes being the next to marry, an on-the-spot proposal is not typical wedding protocol.

The bride added that even vendors were distracted. “Our photographer and videographer missed half of what was supposed to be our photos and videos because they pivoted to the spectacle,” she said.

Even days after the ceremony, the bride feels the spotlight was stolen from her and her new husband.

“My husband says we should just let it go because ‘it’s done and over,’ but honestly I feel robbed of one of my special moments,” she admitted.

Reddit commenters largely sided with the bride, calling the surprise proposal “tacky” and “selfish” since it was done without the couple’s consent.

A few users, however, echoed the groom’s view, advising the bride not to dwell on the incident. “[Don’t] continue to waste energy and continue to hold on to this, otherwise it will further impact OP’s (original poster) mental health. Unfortunately, they can’t turn back time and change the day,” one commenter wrote.

Opinions were also split regarding the photographers. Some felt the bride shouldn’t “blame” the professionals for capturing the unexpected proposal, assuming they believed the couple was in on the plan. Others argued the bride and groom deserved a partial refund for the distraction.

“If I saw that at a wedding I would only assume that it was preplanned bc [because] no one would be a big enough loser to actually do that at someone’s wedding,” one Redditor noted.

Another wrote: “I would certainly be deducting a portion of the photographer’s and videographer’s fees for not focusing on the job they were paid to do.”
