After waking up to find their jeans soaked in cat urine, a frustrated sibling asked their brother to replace the ruined pair. The brother refused — and the internet largely sided with him.
The sibling shared the story on Reddit’s “Am I the A——?” forum, explaining that they had stayed overnight at their brother’s home after missing the last train back. With no way to get home late at night, they called their brother, who offered them the sofa bed.
According to the post, the night passed without incident — until morning.
When the sibling went to get dressed, they discovered their jeans were wet and foul-smelling, making it clear the brother’s cat had urinated on them overnight. Because their brother is much larger, borrowing clothes wasn’t an option. With no spare outfit, the sibling said they were forced to take the train home wearing the urine-soaked jeans.
The situation worsened when the jeans appeared permanently damaged. The sibling claimed the fabric was stained and the odor lingered, prompting them to ask their brother to send just over $26 to replace the pants. He refused.

The sibling argued that they would have done the same for him, adding that their clothes wouldn’t have been ruined “by an untrained cat.” The brother, however, pushed back — not only declining to pay, but also criticizing them for asking after he had already provided a place to stay.
Uncertain whether they were in the wrong, the sibling turned to Reddit for judgment. Most respondents didn’t see things their way.
“Washing machines take out cat piss,” one top comment read. Others echoed the sentiment, suggesting simple solutions like washing the jeans again or using white vinegar with detergent. Several commenters insisted the pants were salvageable and accused the sibling of making too big a deal out of the situation.
Some pet owners shared personal experience, noting that cat urine rarely causes permanent damage to denim. Others were less sympathetic, bluntly telling the sibling to stop overreacting.

The sibling pushed back in a follow-up comment, stating that they had already washed the jeans twice. Despite their efforts, they said a stain remained and the smell hadn’t fully disappeared. Even if the odor was psychological, they added, the jeans were no longer wearable.
Still, the majority of commenters continued to side with the brother. While some offered detailed cleaning advice, others treated the situation with humor — including one user who summed up their stance simply: “I’m siding with the cat.”
