A 9-year-old girl is recovering after a car crashed through her bedroom window in Center Line, Michigan, while she was asleep.

According to reports from local outlets WXYZ and WDIV, the incident occurred around 3 a.m. on Monday, October 13. The impact threw Laila Breitshtrus from her bed, through a window, and into the yard, where she was later found under debris.

Laila sustained three spinal fractures, a broken nose, and a lacerated liver, according to a GoFundMe page created by Taylor Bradshaw, who organized the fundraiser for the family. Family members told WXYZ that she also suffered cuts and bruises.

Despite the severity of her injuries, Laila’s family expressed gratitude that she survived. She was last reported to be in stable condition, the Macomb Daily reported.

“We’re just hopeful as of right now,” said her mother, Rachael Wright, in a statement to WXYZ.

Laila is expected to need extensive therapy as part of her recovery. “We are grateful that she is alive, but her recovery journey is far from over,” Bradshaw wrote in the GoFundMe description.

Police said a 20-year-old woman was behind the wheel of the vehicle that struck the home. She allegedly tried to flee the scene but was apprehended shortly afterward, according to WXYZ and WDIV. Authorities reported that the driver faces multiple charges and is being held at the Macomb County Jail.
