A day of fun at a Missouri amusement park turned frightening for one couple after a young rider’s seat belt reportedly came undone mid-ride.

Chris and Cassie Evans were on the Mamba roller coaster at Worlds of Fun in Kansas City on Oct. 11 when they heard a scream behind them, according to Fox 8, ABC 7 and KMBC.

“We get on the roller coaster and the very first hill, the girl sitting behind my wife just lets out this blood-curdling scream, like I’ve never heard before,” Chris told Fox 8. “I assumed it was her first time on the ride, but then she said her seat belt came undone.”

Chris explained that he and his wife, both season ticket holders familiar with the ride, immediately acted to help keep the girl secure.

“I had looped my arm underneath her lap bar, which had a pretty big gap between her and the bar. So at this point, I’m seeing a huge space, no seat belt. I looped my arm underneath the lap bar and grabbed a hold of her wrist. My wife was pushing down on her legs,” he said.

The Mamba — the park’s tallest coaster — features a 205-foot initial drop and reaches speeds of up to 75 miles per hour, according to the park’s website. Chris said that with every hill, he felt the girl’s body lift, prompting him to press down to keep her in the seat.

“As we crested each hill or as we started to go up to the top, I recognized that it was going to lift her out of her seat. So I kind of shifted our positions to, instead of holding her, to push down on her whole body to keep her from coming out of the seat while we’re going over those hills,” he added.

When the ride ended, the couple alerted park management. They later became separated from the girl and haven’t been in contact with her since.

A Worlds of Fun spokesperson said in a statement that the ride was “immediately closed” and inspected following the report before reopening that evening. “The ride is equipped with a multi-layered restraint system, with the lap bar being the primary restraint, and [these] were found to be fully functioning in multiple inspections,” the spokesperson said, adding that the attraction “has operated safely since the initial concern was raised.”

They also noted that the park conducted a “comprehensive safety review” and made modifications requested by the Fire Marshal “to ensure it meets or exceeds all applicable safety standards.” Guest and team member safety, the spokesperson emphasized, remains a “top priority.”

Speaking to ABC 7, Cassie described the ordeal as “terrifying.”

“The scream that she screamed — I had never heard anything like that before in my entire life,” said Cassie, a mother of four.

She added that they won’t be returning to Worlds of Fun anytime soon. “We probably won’t go back for a while,” she said. “We need to see a change, and once we see that change I will be comfortable taking my four children — who I am not comfortable taking currently.”
