A Florida father acted heroically to protect four children — and even the man threatening their lives, his own son.

Authorities say 22-year-old Trevor Nieves-Gonzalez was arrested on November 2 after Volusia County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports that a young man had attacked one person and was threatening to kill four children.

When deputies arrived at the Delton home, located about 30 miles north of Orlando, they reportedly found Nieves-Gonzalez on the front lawn. His father was standing between him and the house, blocking him from entering and potentially harming the children inside.

Body-camera footage from the incident shows the father immediately shielding his son when he saw a deputy aiming a gun at him. Deputies then persuaded Nieves-Gonzalez to drop the large hunting knife he had been holding. As they moved in to handcuff him, he allegedly cursed at them, made obscene gestures, and spat on one deputy, prompting officers to deploy a Taser.

After being stunned, Nieves-Gonzalez fell to the ground and was restrained. Only then did his father tell deputies that his son had stabbed him in the back of the head before their arrival. The father was treated for that and other injuries.

Nieves-Gonzalez was taken into custody and now faces several charges, including four counts of aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony, four counts of child abuse, and one count each of aggravated battery, resisting an officer with violence, and battery on a law-enforcement officer.

Following his first court appearance on November 3, Nieves-Gonzalez was assigned a public defender and is scheduled for formal arraignment on December 4, according to court records. He has not issued a comment regarding the charges.
