A 29-year-old father of two has died after falling from a trail while climbing Mount Whitney, one of the highest peaks in the continental United States.
According to a statement from California’s Inyo County Search and Rescue (SAR), rescuers received a report just before 1 p.m. local time on Saturday, Oct. 25, of a hiker who had “fallen from the trail and off a cliff” near the area known as the 99 Switchbacks on the Main Trail.
Authorities later identified the hiker as Paul “PJ” Ortiz Jr., who leaves behind two sons, ages 1 and 3, as well as his parents and sister. “He was the coolest. He was my whole world,” said his 27-year-old sister, Lea.

Because of strong winds, the recovery effort had to be delayed several times before a helicopter crew could safely retrieve Ortiz’s body on Monday, Oct. 27. His remains were then transferred to the care of the Inyo County Coroner.
Another climber, Wes Ostgaard, who encountered Ortiz earlier that day, told USA Today that Ortiz seemed cheerful and confident. “I said, ‘Have you done this before?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, I’ve done Whitney before,’ ” Ostgaard recalled. His group later decided to turn back as conditions worsened—and soon after, they saw Ortiz’s body below.
Ortiz’s sister described the incident as a “freak accident,” saying her brother “knew what he was doing.” She added, “Mother Nature is cruel.”

Mount Whitney, at an elevation of 14,505 feet, is the tallest mountain in the contiguous U.S., according to the National Park Service. Inyo SAR reminded the public that the peak is already facing winter-like conditions with snow, ice, freezing temperatures, and frequent windstorms. The Main Trail, they warned, “is no longer a casual hike but a mountaineering endeavor,” and the 99 Switchbacks “are especially icy and slippery and should not be attempted without proper equipment, experience, and preparation.”
