Melanie Watson, who appeared on Diff’rent Strokes, has died. She was 57.
According to TMZ, Watson died on Friday, Dec. 26, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Her brother, Robert Watson, said she had been hospitalized and that her condition worsened.
Watson was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a genetic disorder also known as Brittle Bone Syndrome. The condition is a connective tissue disease that can make bones especially fragile, according to the Mayo Clinic. She used a wheelchair.

On Diff’rent Strokes—the long-running sitcom starring the late Gary Coleman and Todd Bridges, which aired from 1978 to 1986—Watson appeared in four episodes as Kathy Gordon. Her character was introduced in Season 3 and featured prominently in episodes including “Kathy” (1982) and “Kathy’s Olympics” (1984).
Beyond acting, Watson was married to Robert Bernhardt from 1994 to 1996, per her IMDb bio. She also founded Train Rite, an organization that trains shelter dogs to assist people with disabilities.
In a 2020 interview with IndieWire, Watson reflected on the impact of her role and praised producer Norman Lear for pushing disability representation forward. She also looked back on her time on set with humor, recalling that she could be a handful—and later said she wished she’d stayed in the industry longer.
