A man in New York City fell asleep on the subway and woke up to find that his dog was gone. Police say the dog was stolen, and although the pet has since been returned, they are still searching for the thief.
According to an NYPD spokesperson, the theft happened early Sunday morning around 6 a.m. on a northbound D train near the Norwood-205th Street stop in the Bronx.
“An unidentified individual took a 45-year-old man’s American Bully dog while he was asleep,” the spokesperson said. The suspect then ran off with the dog.
Security footage from Aug. 10 showed the thief leaving the station with the dog hidden inside his hoodie as he passed through an exit turnstile.

The NYPD described the suspect as a man in his early 20s with a dark complexion, slim build, medium-length black braids, brown eyes, and a black goatee. At the time of the theft, he was wearing a faded black jacket, black T-shirt, black shorts, black shoes, and a black baseball cap.
The dog was safely returned to its owner on Thursday, police told PEOPLE. The Daily News reported that the pet was dropped off anonymously outside a Bronx precinct house.
The suspect, however, has not yet been caught.
