George Clooney has responded sharply after President Donald Trump characterized reports of the actor and his wife Amal Clooney becoming French citizens as “good news.”

Trump, 79, weighed in on the reports Wednesday, Dec. 31, via a Truth Social post, referring to George, 64, Amal, 47, and their 8-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella. He described the couple as “two of the worst political prognosticators of all time” while commenting on their reported naturalization.

Clooney replied in a statement on Jan. 2, saying, “I totally agree with the current president. We have to make America great again. We’ll start in November,” a remark referencing the upcoming midterm elections. The statement was first shared with The Hollywood Reporter on New Year’s Day.

A White House spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trump’s post described it as “good news” that the Clooneys had “officially become citizens of France,” adding criticism of France’s handling of immigration and comparing it to what he called similar issues under former President Joe Biden.

The president also revisited a July 2024 op-ed Clooney wrote for The New York Times, in which the actor urged then-President Biden to step aside following concerns raised by Biden’s performance in a June 2024 presidential debate.

In his post, Trump continued by criticizing Clooney’s political involvement and mocking his film career, claiming the actor received “more publicity for politics than he did for his very few, and totally mediocre movies.” He concluded the message with, “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Clooney, a longtime critic of Trump, previously said in 2021 that the Trump name would be relegated to the “dustbin of history” following the January 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol. Speaking on an episode of KCRW’s The Business podcast, he said, “That name will now forever be associated with insurrection.”

Amal Clooney, a human rights lawyer, has also spoken out against Trump in the past. In 2019, she argued that his rhetoric toward the press made “honest journalists all over the world more vulnerable to abuse.”

Despite the public criticism, Clooney has acknowledged that he once knew Trump personally. In a recent interview with Variety, he said, “He used to call me a lot, and he tried to help me get into a hospital once to see a back surgeon. I’d see him out at clubs and at restaurants. He’s a big goofball. Well, he was. That all changed.”

The Clooneys currently live in France, a decision Clooney has said was influenced by concerns about “raising our kids in L.A., in the culture of Hollywood.” According to a naturalization decree published by the French newspaper Journal officiel, George and Amal Clooney obtained French citizenship in December 2025.
