A high school athlete in Alabama was killed in a shooting last week, leaving his family and community heartbroken.

D’Marcus Riggins, 17, died at the hospital after being shot in Sylacauga, Alabama, on the night of Friday, August 8, the Sylacauga Police Department said.

Police say they responded to reports of gunfire and found D’Marcus and another person wounded. The second victim’s injuries were not life-threatening, but officers had to perform CPR on D’Marcus at the scene.

D’Marcus was a basketball player at B.B. Comer Memorial High School and had just started his senior year. His mother, Tykeshia Riggins, said she spoke to him about an hour before the shooting.

She told ABC 3340 that earlier that day, D’Marcus had gone to play basketball with friends. He called to ask if he could bring a friend over, but an hour later, he was shot while walking to his car after dropping someone off.

A GoFundMe has been created to help cover funeral costs. On the fundraiser page, his mother wrote, “He was only 17 years old — full of life, dreams, and love,” adding that she is “devastated, heartbroken, and still in shock.”

The Talladega County Schools said in a statement that they were “deeply saddened” by his death and gave students the chance to gather for prayer in his memory.

Police have not made any arrests or announced a motive. Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for tips that could help solve the case.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sgt. Vinson at 256-391-4386, Central Alabama Crime Stoppers at 1-833-251-7867, or call 911 in an emergency.
