Democrats on the House Oversight Committee have called on Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, formerly Prince Andrew, to submit to questioning over his involvement with Jeffrey Epstein.
“Rich and powerful men have evaded justice for far too long,” said Rep. Robert Garcia, the committee’s ranking member. “Now, former Prince Andrew has the opportunity to come clean and provide justice for the survivors. Oversight Democrats will not stop fighting for accountability and transparency for survivors of Epstein and his network of co-conspirators.”
Andrew was stripped of his royal titles by King Charles following his association with Epstein, who died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal s*x trafficking charges.
In a letter addressed to Andrew, committee Democrats wrote: “It has been publicly reported that your friendship with Mr. Epstein began in 1999 and that you remained close through and after his 2008 conviction for procuring minors for prostitution. The Committee requests that you make yourself available for a transcribed interview and provide insight into the crimes of Jeffrey Epstein’s co-conspirators.”
The letter asks Andrew to respond by Nov. 20, citing “the urgency and gravity of this matter.”
Files tied to the Epstein case have sparked widespread controversy because of the financier’s connections to prominent figures such as Andrew, President Donald Trump, and former President Bill Clinton.
Andrew, the third child of Queen Elizabeth II, was named in survivor Virginia Giuffre’s 2015 lawsuit against Epstein, in which she alleged she was trafficked to the then-prince at age 17. Giuffre sued Andrew again in 2021, though he has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
Rep. Suha Subramanyam (D-Va.) echoed the call for cooperation, saying: “After hearing from Epstein’s victims and reviewing public reports of leaked documents, it is vital that Andrew cooperates with the ongoing investigation. If he is innocent, he can clear his name. If not, our investigation will show that, and the victims will receive long-overdue justice. The Royal Family’s decision to strip Andrew of his titles suggests there is more to this story.”
Epstein’s 2019 death by suicide in a New York City jail remains the subject of ongoing scrutiny. His longtime associate, Ghislaine Maxwell—who also maintained ties to Andrew—is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for child s*x trafficking.
